Lovin' the Library

We love spending time at our local library.  They offer a lot of weekend and summer activities.  Emma took part in a Martha Speaks book club for several weeks this summer.  Each week they read stories, played games, and made projects to go with the theme of the chosen Martha Speaks book.  Emma brought a friend, and the girls had a great time.  Scott played with Lauren up in the Children's Department while I enjoyed time with the older girls in the Community Room.

If You Give a Cat a Cupcake

The libraries in town sponsored a one-hour children's play based on Laura Numeroff's If You Give a Cat a Cupcake.  This three-member cast performed the cute tale at the community college on a Saturday afternoon.  Scott and I took Emma and Emma brought Kibby, her little kitty.  (Lauren was happily at home with her grandparents.)  We found front-row seats, which is essential for the pint-sized.  Afterward, the cast posed for pictures, which I thought was so sweet.  Emma just beamed!

Heart Day Story Hour

We love our local library! Each month they host family story hour on a Saturday morning. The librarian reads 2 books and leads 2 songs The kids also get to do a related craft and 1-2 games based on the theme. Then we spend another hour playing in the Discovery Room and picking out books to take home.

Cars (And Trucks) - Part 1

Another one of Emma's big interests this summer was cars and trucks. We read many books and I found several activities based on her current favorite movie (the only real movie she's ever seen) Cars. Visit 1 + 1 + 1 = 1 and Our Little Monkeys for the resources.

Uppercase & Lowercase Mm - We used pom poms and then Playdough to form the letters M and m.

Shapes - I read and showed Emma the shape word (hexagon), and she found the matching card. It obviously helped review shapes, but I liked that it also focused on word recognition.

Shadow Match - We mixed up the 12 cards and then Emma looked at the outline of the original Cars' character to locate it's matching shadow.

McDonald Magic

Ronald McDonald put on an interactive magic show at the BPL one summer afternoon. All of his illusions revolved around the summer reading program theme, "A Mid-Summer Night's Read." He posed for pictures following the performance.

Dino Days - Part 1

Emma became interested in dinosaurs this summer after visiting the Indy Children's Museum. When we went to the gift shop, she really wanted a stuffed Brachiosaurs. She named him Dino. In the days after we got home, we picked out some good books at the library and I planned some fun learning activities. Here are a few that we did the first week.

Grow a Dino - The materials include Dollar Tree dinosaurs in capsules, water, Easter eggs, Easter grass, a container for the nest, and a mommy dino.

Pom Pom Fun - The skills she practiced include hand-eye coordination and letter formation.

Size Sequencing - This activity came from Confessions of a Homeschooler. I printed several of her dino projects to use in our little dinosaur unit.

Q-Tip Art - I found this worksheet at Making Learning Fun. Emma used Q-tips and finger paint to carefully fill in each circle.

Puzzles & Play

One of our favorite summer activities (free, local, and educational) is visiting the Normal Public Library. They have a new discovery play room and frequently host special children's events . . . not to mention the books! On a hot July day, we spent the afternoon putting together puzzles, exploring the new hands-on room, reading stories as a family, and picking out books to borrow. Just as we were leaving, I noticed a photo display and spotted a picture of Emma and me at a recent story hour doing a craft.

Puppet Performance

Our local library hosts great events and we were lucky enough to attend yet another. The ventriloquist, Lisa Laird, presented her "Stories are Magic" program. Her company is called Pockets Full of Fun, and the audience certainly enjoyed all of her puppets and voices. After the performance, the children were able to make their own TP tube hand puppets. Emma chose the red paper, curling ribbon, googly eyes, a foam star, and buttons. Her friend, Natalia, was also there, so the girls had a nice time crafting together.

Creatures of Compost

Well, we aren't prepared to begin composting, but we took Emma to a presentation on composting at the library where she got to learn about the creatures called decomposers: worms, snails, and millipedes.

Puppet Palooza

The public library had a Puppet Palooza event during Spring Break week. They offered about 20 different animal puppets for the kids to make. They looked amazing. Emma chose the elephant and giraffe. We constructed the purple elephant, but then Emma ran out of artistic steam. She wanted to go home and play outside. So we saved the giraffe for an at-home project.

Order Up!

The theme of Saturday story hour at the public library was "What's Cooking?" We read Walter the Baker by Eric Carle, ate pretzels, sang songs, and made chef hats. For those of you who don't know the story of Walter the baker, Walter was challenged by the Duke to create a pastry from one piece of dough that the sun could shine through three times. Thus, Walter invented the pretzel. Here Chef Emma is whipping us up some grub in her playroom kitchen.

See Spot

I took Emma to a summer reading event at the local library. They read a Spot book and the real pup performed the parts of the story. Afterward, the children could play a game, eat a treat, and take a photo with the guest of honor. We also wandered around the set to explore the scenery and peek out of Spot's hiding place in the basket.

Decatur Public Library

Emma loves to go places and see kids. Her face lights up when we ask her if she wants to go to the library or museum or park. She'll squeal, "Kids! Yeah, OK!" Papa Mike, Grammy Jill, and I took her to the Decatur Public Library's Children's Department to look around one day when Scott was at his ISU grad class. She bopped from one thing to another . . . coloring, puzzles, blocks, stuffed animals, books, puppet stage. Emma had fun, but we were sure tired!
