50's Diner

On our way to Chicago for my cousin's wedding, we stopped for a bite to eat. Emma had the chance to meet Betty Boop and the Blues Brothers at That 50's Place restaurant in Dwight. She was thoroughly entertained by the decor while we waited for our malts and meals!

Surprises Under the Tree

Emma had a lot of fun discovering the presents left under the tree. She rode her new big girl bike around the house many times on Christmas Day. And while the 3 in 1 soccer goal, hockey goal, baseball pitch-back is also an outdoor toy, it's getting a lot of use inside already. In the days before Christmas, Emma said she only wanted two things from Santa: a drum set and a construction set. Well, Santa brought her a little set of construction vehicles. The drum set was from Grandma Jill and Grandpa Mike, but Emma opened in on Christmas morning. She's rocking and rolling!

Christmas Eve Treats

This year Emma left 3 cookies and hot chocolate with marshmallows for Santa. (Did you see her sneak a few marshmallows for herself?) The reindeer got their traditional carrots on the front porch. Everyone seemed to enjoy their Christmas Eve treats!

Three Year Pictures

We were a little late in taking Emma's three-year photos this year. It is completely my fault, because I was trying to find coordinating outfits for the three of us. Emma was much more cooperative this year. As a two-year-old, the big flashing lights and rushed process unsettled her. She didn't want to pose and smile. We ended the session early due to the teary, red face. Even so, we walked away with great photos that year. And I was so pleased with these as well. Emma is such a happy girl!

Baby Boy or Girl?

Emma's got something pretty special that she'd like to share with you! She'll have a little sister in late April! (Emma was overjoyed to find her pink bath duck in the baby bag, but the actual color didn't phase her. So much for our creative announcement!)

Toy Donations

Emma chose 5 baby toys (in honor of her new baby sister) from K-mart to donate this year. She and Scott took them to a Toys for Tots drop site . . . after she played with them for a few days. Yes, they remained in their boxes while she played! We started this tradition of giving in 2008, when Emma was just 5 months old. Now that she is older, it is great to see her selecting, packing, and delivering the donations. While Emma enjoyed playing with the toys, she was also genuinely excited to give them to a needy child for Christmas.

Bib is for Baby

Emma only knew that Scott and I had ordered cookies to share with our family members and Mommy's teacher friends. She was so excited to open the box and see them. And while she recognized the pink and blue booties, rattles, bibs, footprints, bottles, etc., she didn't question why we would want cookies with baby designs. She just wanted to eat one! This was surprising, because she doesn't have a sweet tooth. We were trying to tell Emma that she was going to be a big sister as she nibbled away on her dessert!

Superheroes! - Part 2

Books: A year or two ago, Target had these kid-friendly superhero books with Marvel characters in the dollar bins. For those of you who are not privy to the comic world, DC created Superman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, among others. Marvel penned Spider-Man, Iron Man, Wolverine, Captain America, Hulk, etc.

Puppets: Scott and Emma created several straw puppets over the course of a week--Tinkerbell, Elmo, Curious George, etc. After watching her Daddio make a Batman stick puppet, she decided to make her own one night when he was at class. Look closely at her version, complete with bat ears on the top of his head!

Creative Play with Figures: Scott snagged this Imaginext Batcave as part of Amazon Vine. They ask him to write reviews for products after reading/using them. This was a rare toy on the list of product to receive and review, and an expensive one at that--free! Emma loves playing with her tub 'o' superheroes with the cave.

Superheroes! - Part 1

Size Sequencing: These Hulk cards, as well as the next several activities, came from a blog called Preschool Printables.

Superhero Identification: Emma added a pom pom on the superhero as it was named. If I was a true fan, I would have known the alter ego of each, but I was only successful at recalling Batman is Bruce Wayne, Spider-Man is Peter Parker, Superman is Clark Kent, Hulk is Bruce Banner, and Wolverine is Logan something. (I checked with Scott, and he said It's just Logan--no last name. I guess I know more than I thought!)

One of These Is Not Like the Others: Three of the heroes in the row were exactly the same, but one was slightly different. Emma placed a pom pom on the one that was different.

Line Tracing: The Crayola dry-erase crayons work great on laminated pages.

Name Writing: Emma flipped over her tracing page to write her name--terrific!

Science Experiment 9

Experiment: Shiny Pennies

Materials: Old pennies, bowl, lemon juice, towel

Procedure: Add lemon juice to the bowl. Drop in old pennies. Wait 5-10 minutes. Remove the pennies and use the towel to rub them clean.

Results: The acidic lemon juice removes the oxide from the copper pennies, making them shiny!
